Cell Meter Milk Test

Description:

This test has been developed for monitoring the SCC of individual cows more frequently than is possible with monthly laboratory results.  Cows harbouring sub-clinical infections will tend to have high somatic cell counts, spread disease and contribute disproportionately to rising bulk tank cell counts.  By targeting selected cows for more frequent monitoring, swifter treatment and better clear-up rates can be achieved.

Features of the Cell Meter Milk Test:

•    Read 45 - 60 minutes after adding milk to test strip.
•    Read results by placing test strip in Digital Reader.

The test lets you:

•    Check fresh calvers immediately before milk returned to tank.
•    Monitor response to treatment – alerts you to a residual sub-clinical infection.
•    Identify problem cows and quarters or follow up on cows identified by monthly laboratory tests.

Rapid Milk Test

Description:

The Rapid Milk Test  milk ketone test is now available in two sizes - 25 test and 100 test vials. It is stable at room temperature and has a shelf life of 24 months if kept in the convenient tightly sealed desiccant vial.

Ketosis is a condition that occurs in dairy cattle when the demand for energy exceeds intake, resulting in a negative energy balance.  This condition occurs most frequently in the postpartum period, especially in high-producing cows.  When the diet does not provide enough energy, the body begins to metabolize fat reserves, resulting in the formation of ketones.  Beta-hydroxybutyrate  is one of the ketones produced during this process.

Long term effects of ketosis include lowered milk production, an increased risk of other diseases such as displaced abomasum, and even impaired fertility. By detecting ketosis before it becomes clinical, producers can take steps to avoid clinical health effects and loss of income.

The Rapid Milk Test  ketone test is a semi-quantitative dipstick for the detection of subclinical ketosis.  Dip the test strip into a milk sample and compare to a color chart. The test strip changes colour in the presence of BHB.  The higher the concentration of BHB, the greater the colour change.

Udder Check

Description:

This is a milk dipstick test which detects bacterial infections of the udder.  It is much simpler to use and detects mastitis earlier than the California Mastitis Test (CMT).

•    Milk dipstick test – result in 2 minutes.
•    Dip and compare to colour chart.
•    Detects LDH (Lactate Dehydrogenase).
•    LDH monitoring is now used in some automated milking systems.
•    Ideal for routine testing of fresh calvers, post-treatment or other problem cows prior to return to herd.

Protocol for testing:

Test fresh calvers after 10 days or prior to returning to herd, whichever comes first.

•    Forestrip.  Collect a composite milk sample.
•    Dip test strip in milk sample, wait 2 minutes and compare to colour chart.
[If result positive, test individual quarters to identify infected one(s).]
•    If any test result is positive, follow established management procedures or consult your vet.
